Until Mark Dantonio became the head football coach at Michigan State, the Spartans were only known as a basketball school.

Times have changed with the emergence of the football team.

Sporting News ranked the best football-basketball combination school in college sports since 2010 and Michigan and Michigan State were within the top 16.

The Michigan Wolverines came in at 16 on the list.

Since 2010 the football team has a 48-29 record and basketball had a 143-70 with a combined .659 winning percentage.

Trending: Up. Michigan holds the same spot as last year, but Jim Harbaugh led the football team to 10 wins in Year 1. The basketball team also returned to the NCAA tournament under John Beilein.

Michigan State was near the top of the list at number 3.

The football team has a record of 65-16, Tom Izzo's Spartans have had a 160-59 record which makes a combined winning percentage of .750.

Trending: Steady. The Spartans have arguably the best coach combination in Mark Dantonio and Tom Izzo. Dantonio guided the Spartans to the College Football Playoff. Despite the upset loss to Middle Tennessee State, Izzo continues to run a top-10 program.

Ohio State (1) and Oregon (2) were the only programs ranked higher than the Spartans.
