Michigan State Joins Effort Against Campus Sex Assault

EAST LANSING (AP/WWJ) - Michigan State University says it's joining a White House campaign to help fight campus sexual assault.

The East Lansing university says the effort unveiled Friday by the Obama administration called "It's On Us" complements the school's "No Excuse for Sexual Assault" campaign launched last year.

MSU Senior Advisory Paulette Granberry Russel says the federal effort focuses on not only victims reporting sexual assaults, but also on bystander intervention and communicating directly with student groups on campus about this issue.

"What ways can all of us help to prevent and better respond when we see the potential of sexual assault?" Russel said.

University President Lou Anna Simon says "sexual violence is not met with indifference" on campus and there should be no "passive observers."

The U.S. Education Department in May revealed its list of 55 colleges under investigation for the way they handle sexual abuse allegations. Michigan State and University of Michigan were among them.

The government has emphasized the list was about investigations, not judgments.
