Michigan Schools Starting New Online Standardized Testing

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan schools are starting new online standardized testing this week.

The Detroit News reports officials say they expect a smooth rollout of the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress. Districts have eight weeks starting Monday to complete the exams.

The new test, known as the M-STEP, replaces the pencil-and-paper Michigan Educational Assessment Program test that was used for decades. State Superintendent Mike Flanagan says that test runs took place of the online system and officials want schools to be ready.

Some districts that obtained waivers will get a pencil-and-paper version of M-STEP.

English language arts and mathematics will be assessed in grades three through eight, science in grades four and seven, and social studies in grades five and eight. It also includes the Michigan Merit Examination in 11th grade.
