Michigan School District Defends Actions In Case Of Injured Special Ed Student

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A Michigan school district says it took "quick and appropriate action" against a special education teacher after a student was tossed to a classroom floor.

The Lansing School District, some officials and former teacher Lester Duvall are named in a federal civil lawsuit filed this week by Jennifer Garza.

The suit says Garza's now-13-year-old son suffered a concussion, bruising and a black eye after the incident last year. Garza says her son has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit disorder.

Schools Superintendent Yvonne Caamal Canul says Wednesday in a statement that the teacher "was immediately removed from the classroom."

Duvall was fired last year. Court records show he was charged with a misdemeanor and fined $300 in June.

A telephone number listed for Duvall was disconnected.
