Pilot Accused Of Being Drunk On Plane Won't Attend Hearing

ROMULUS (AP) — A court hearing is planned in the case of an American Airlines co-pilot who was grounded at a Detroit-area airport because of alcohol.

John Maguire is charged with operating under the influence of alcohol on March 26. Defense attorney Frank Manley says he'll be in court Wednesday in Romulus but Maguire won't attend. He didn't elaborate.

Maguire, from Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, was removed from a Detroit-to-Philadelphia flight before takeoff at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Authorities say his blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit.

Manley says the 50-year-old Maguire is an "outstanding pilot" who wants to return to the cockpit.
