Michigan Nominates Belle Isle, 7 Other Sites To US Register Of Historic Places

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit's Belle Isle Park, an Elk Rapids church, Hart's downtown district and the Saugatuck Pump House are among the nominees for the National Register of Historic Places.

The State Historic Preservation Office said Wednesday it has nominated eight sites for what preservationists consider the nation's definitive list of historic sites. State Historic Preservation Officer Brian Conway says the nominees "are vastly different from one another."

Detroit's nominees are Belle Isle Park and the former Detroit News Complex. The list also includes Elk Rapids First United Methodist Church in the northwestern Lower Peninsula, the central business district in the western Michigan community of Hart and the original pump house in southwestern Michigan's Saugatuck now home to the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society.

The northernmost nominee is the Upper Peninsula's Bewabic State Park.
