Michigan Matters: Major League Soccer In Detroit
What are prospects for a MLS team in Detroit and having a new stadium built for it at the controversial Wayne County Jail site?
That was a hot topic at the Michigan Chronicle's "Pancakes and Politics" forum Thursday at the DAC. It was the third forum of the signature spring time speaker series started 11 years ago. The sold out forum was launched by Hiram Jackson, publisher of the paper and also CEO of Real Times Media.
Taking the stage this week was Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, Dan Loepp, President/CEO of BCBSM of Michigan, and Arn Tellem, vice chair of the Palace Sports & Entertainment which owns the Detroit Pistons.
Pistons Owner Tom Gores, and Dan Gilbert, founder of Rock Financial , recently announced their bid to try and bring a MLS team to the Motor City.
Tellem and Evans debated what it would take to have the jail and accompanying facilities as part of the mix for a potential stadium.
On other matters, Loepp talked about the importance of urban cities in Michigan.
Duggan discussed the need for more internships in Detroit and invited the 400 participants at the breakfast to join in their effort.
