'Michigan Matters' Focus: Detroit's Landscape Undergoing Changes

Things are a changing in Detroit as Thom Connors, who runs Cobo Center, talked about during a far flung conversation on "Michigan Matters" about the convention center and its growing impact on the Motor City.

Connors talked to Senior Producer/Host Carol Cain about the $299 million renovation that is nearing completion that gives a major facelift to the facility built in the 1960s.

Connors, who came to Detroit five years ago to take over Cobo, gave a shout out to Rod Alberts and the Detroit Auto Dealers Association, for helping broker a deal that saw creation of a regional authority that is charged with overseeing finances of Cobo. Ihe authority includes representatives of the city, state and three Metro Detroit counties.

Then Mark Wallace, CEO of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, talked about water taxis along the city's riverfront and other improvements to make the green areas there more user-friendly.

Wallace, a former high school teacher in Detroit who works on real estate projects in Chicago and Detroit, took over the conservancy a year ago. He talked about huge crowds that attended the recent GM River Days and other events including Jimmy Buffett concerts.
