Michigan Humane Society Opens $15.5 Million Animal Care Center In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Michigan Humane Society is showing off its new multi-million-dollar facility in Detroit.

The MHS's state-of-the-art Detroit Animal Care Campus, on the I-75 Service Drive, opened its doors to the public for the first time on Monday, and WWJ's Vickie Thomas took the tour.

Spokesman Ryan McTeague showed off a well-lit room that houses adoptable cats.

"The first thing you'll notice is everything here is bright and airy," he told Thomas. "It's just great for reducing stress on cats because they really have a hard time adjusting to shelters...but you can see our kittens are enjoying their perches. We have big open areas."

"It's also, if you notice, very quiet," added McTeague. "You don't hear dogs barking."

The price tag for the place was $15.5 million which was all raised through donations made specifically for the facility.

"And we're very excited to be in this new building. We've been in Detroit for 139 years; been in our old building since 1931," McTeague said. "...We wanna make sure we thank everyone who helped us make this dream become a reality."

Lisa Ochoa, who was impressed by the new facility, came in with a dog she's fostering.

"Reagan came in with a fractured pelvis and something in his eye. It was an abrasion," she said. "We think he was run over by a car — completely run over —but he's doing really well now."

She said she plans to adopt the little guy.
