Michigan House OKs Bill To Clarify New Election Law

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan House has passed an updated version of a bill meant to clarify a new election law limiting what information local and school officials can send to voters about upcoming ballot proposals.

The House passed the bill 60-46 on Tuesday.

Gov. Rick Snyder had asked lawmakers to clarify it when he signed the bill into law earlier this year.

The law stopped local and school officials from using tax dollars to distribute information about upcoming ballot proposals 60 days before an election through mass mailing campaigns, robo-calls, TV and radio ads.

The new version of the bill from Alto Republican Rep. Lisa Posthumus Lyons would let local officials distribute factual and neutral information.

A federal judge had issued a preliminary injunction after he ruled the law was unclear.
