Michigan House Committee Looks At Eliminating Tax Credit To Fund Roads
LANSING (AP) - A Michigan legislative committee is taking up a bill that would eliminate a tax credit for low-income families as part of a plan from Republican House Speaker Kevin Cotter to provide more money for road repairs.
The Roads and Economic Development committee will discuss the bill Tuesday. The bill will likely be approved by the Republican-majority committee Wednesday with other bills in the road-funding package.
Backers say the overall package would eventually generate at least $1 billion a year for funding the roads.
Democrats and groups including the Michigan League for Public Policy have slammed the proposal to eliminate the Earned Income Tax Credit, which supports low-income working families.
Supporters of eliminating the credit say it would free up an estimated $117 million a year to be put toward roads.
