Michigan Gets $5.5M To Provide Summer Meals To Children

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan has received a $5.5 million federal grant to provide meals to children during the summer months.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Michigan Department of Education announced Monday that the state is one of eight selected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to get 2015 Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children funding.

This year, Michigan's funding will serve more than 40,000 students by providing families with electronic benefit transfer cards to purchase food.

The state says students getting meals are in school districts including Detroit, Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Bay-Arenac Intermediate, Clare-Gladwin Regional, Midland County Educational, Tuscola Intermediate, Alpena and Houghton-Portage Township.
