Michigan Filmmaker Michael Moore Demands That Cops Get Disarmed

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) Controversial filmmaker and Michigan native Michael Moore is making waves with a Twitter stance demanding that American police officers be disarmed.

Moore made his position known in the wake of Baltimore riots that saw fires and looting as part of a public disturbance that started with a protest at the funeral of Freddie Gray, a young man who died in police custody.

Gray was arrested in West Baltimore, and suffered a spinal cord injury that led to his death. He was arrested after allegedly running from officers, and was eventually put in leg irons in the back of a paddywagon. He was taken to the hospital at some point on the ride to jail, where he later died.

According to CBS Baltimore, the criminal investigation into Gray's death is now in the hands of the Office of the State's Attorney, which is also conducting its own independent investigation. The State's Attorney will determine whether to file criminal charges against the officers.

Meanwhile, Moore claimed on Twitter that 50 percent of incarcerated people didn't do what they were accused of, and called prison a "modern day slave system."

Moore, known for loudly voicing political opinions, most recently drew the ire of some on social media during publicity for movie "American Sniper." While the film profiled the life of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, who was the most deadly American sniper in Iraq, Moore called snipers "cowards."
