Michigan Developing Master Plan For Belle Isle Trail System

DETROIT (AP) - The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is developing a master plan for Belle Isle's trail system that includes a trail around its perimeter and a Detroit trailhead for the Iron Belle Trail.

A public meeting is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at Flynn Pavilion on the island park.

Park attractions include bicycle lanes on the park's main perimeter road and hiking trails. Plans call for developing and expanding the trail system to include a 6-mile, multi-use paved trail loop around the perimeter.

The master plan will help develop the trail system, create trail signs and identify gaps in Belle Isle's existing trail system. It also will determine a location for the southern end of Michigan's Iron Belle Trail, which will link to Ironwood in the western Upper Peninsula.
