Michigan DEQ Rejects Request To Store Pet Coke Along Detroit River Citing Dust Control Measures

LANSING (AP) - The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has rejected a company's request to store piles of petroleum coke at a site along the Detroit River.

In a letter to Detroit Bulk Storage, Lynn Fiedler of the DEQ's air quality division says the company failed to outline sufficient dust control measures in its revised application.

Pet coke is burned as fuel in cement kilns and power plants.

The piles in Detroit were from Marathon Oil's shale operations in Alberta, Canada.

They are now being stored at a site in Ohio.
