Michigan Dad Charged With Abuse After Baby Dies

ALLEGAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A 22-year-old man authorities say told detectives he was drunk and high when he gave his 3-month-old son fatal blows to the head has been charged with first-degree child abuse.

Jonathan Colby was arraigned Friday in an Allegan County court and held on a $500,000 bond. The Kalamazoo Gazette reports that investigators say additional charges could be brought.

The Allegan County sheriff's department says deputies found Jase Colby unresponsive Wednesday at an Allegan Township home about 30 miles south-southwest of Grand Rapids. The department says the boy was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Authorities say the father told them he hit and choked Jase. Child welfare workers say they have previously investigated Colby and Jase's mother.

It wasn't immediately clear if Colby had an attorney in the criminal case.
