Michigan County Sells Historic Bridge To Delaware Attraction

CALEDONIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A historic, deteriorating Michigan bridge is being sold to a Delaware tourist attraction that recreates the early days of the automotive age.

The Argus-Press of Owosso reported Saturday the Shiawassee County Road Commission is selling the long-closed Martin Road Bridge for $1 to Auburn Heights Preserve in Yorklyn, Delaware. The attraction plans to restore and install it next summer.

Commission Managing Director Brent Friess says he's glad "the bridge will live, and show its glory." He added there wasn't money to save the structure and he fears it would have fallen into the Shiawassee River.

The metal truss bridge was built in 1885 and is a registered state historic site. It's one of the oldest bridges of its kind in Michigan.

It was closed to traffic in 1987.
