Michigan Braces For 1st Major Snowfall Tonight

HOUGHTON, Mich. (AP) - Parts of Michigan are bracing for the first major snowfall of the season.

The National Weather Service issued a warning for parts of the Upper Peninsula, including Keweenaw and Houghton counties. Forecasts call for 9-14 inches (23-36 centimeters) of snow starting Thursday night and ending Saturday morning, with winds gusting up to 35 mph (56 kph).

Forecasters say travel could be difficult. Snowfall totals of 6-12 inches (15-30 centimeters) are possible in other parts of the western Upper Peninsula.

Elsewhere, a blast of wintry weather also is forecast, with 3-5 inches (7.5-12.5 centimeters) of snow possible in the western and southwestern Lower Peninsula. Cold temperatures are spread across the state and southeastern Michigan including Detroit could get 1-2 inches (2.5-5 centimeters).
