Michigan Boxer Dies After Collapsing During Pro Debut

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio boxing official says a Michigan-based fighter has died days after he collapsed and lost consciousness during his professional debut.

The boxer has been identified as 19-year-old Hamzah Ajahmi, of Dearborn. Ohio Athletic Commission executive director Bernie Profato says Ajahmi died Tuesday at a Youngstown hospital after undergoing brain surgery following Saturday's fight.

Profato says Ajahmi collapsed at the end of the fourth and final round in a flyweight bout against an Ohio boxer who also was making his professional debut. Profato says Ajahmi was knocked down three times in the first round but rallied to win the second and third rounds based on the judges' scorecards.

A cousin of Ajahmi's tells the Detroit Free Press that Ajahmi fell in love with boxing as a child.
