Michigan AG Announces Charges Against 3 Dearborn Men For Racketeering
DETROIT (WWJ) - Being a bookie is big bucks - up until the time you get caught.
Fraser police uncovered an illegal sports gambling operation and now the state attorney general's office is announcing charges against three Dearborn men.
One of the men, Ray Arfan, owns a Subway restaurant and the Avenue Bar, both on Michigan Avenue on Michigan.
Spokeswoman Joy Yearout says the sports bookie was raking in the dough.
"Our investigators estimate the operation ranged between five hundred thousand and a million dollars while it was going on," said Yearout.
She told WWJ that gamblers were given accounts to login online but made the bets at one of the defendant's businesses.
Arfan and two alleged conspirators are charged with racketeering among other counts.
Yearout says there's no evidence the group used strong-armed tactics to get their money.
