Metro Detroiter Who Lost Mom To Alzheimer's Raises More Than $20K To Fight The Disease

DETROIT (WWJ) - Thousands of metro Detroiters are stepping up to help fight America's sixth leading cause of death. And you think that killer would be something like cancer...but we're talking about Alzheimer's disease.

The condition is escalating so quickly that it will soon affect many more than 5 million Americans who live with it right now.

That's why raising money is so important to people like Kim Simecek.

Kim lost her mom, Sharon, to early on-set Alzheimer's just last year at just 69 years old.

"Watching someone who was perfectly healthy otherwise  — I mean, she was fit as a fiddle — to watch her kind of disintegrate and be taken from this disease...it was a really difficult time in my life and our family's life," she said.

The Sharon's Spirit team has raised more than $20,000 for the cause.
