Metro Detroit man, 72, found dead in garage fire

Metro Detroit man found dead in garage fire

WARREN, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - A man was found dead after a garage fire in Warren early Friday morning, officials said.

The fire broke out at 4:45 a.m. in the detached garage of a home in the 5000 block of Arden Ave, near the Warren Community Center, according to Warren Police Commissioner Charles Rushton.

After receiving reports of the fire, the officials responded, discovered the garage on fire and found a man dead inside it.

Warren police and fire authorities contacted the man's wife, who was inside the residence, and they confirmed that the man found was the 72-year-old homeowner.

No foul play is suspected, and neither is arson.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the fire appears to be accidental, and the cause might have been a space heater that the man knocked over while in the garage. Authorities are working to determine if the man might have had a medical emergency at the time of the incident, which caused him to knock over the space heater.

There were no other injuries, and the house was not damaged.

Authorities are waiting for information from the medical examiner's office to determine the official cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing.
