Metro Detroit Group Works To Raise Awareness About Depression And Suicide

DETROIT (WWJ) - With the death of comedian Robin Williams still fresh on many minds, people globally are observing World Suicide Prevention Day.

In metro Detroit, groups like Neighborhood Service Organization are working to help raise awareness, so more people are able to recognize the warning signs of depression and suicide.

WWJ Health Reporter Sean Lee spoke with the NSO's LaNiece Jones.

"Often times there are warnings signs or things that we may not be able to recognize," said Jones, "but just simply asking someone — if you know there are certain behavioral changes —just asking them, 'Are you OK? Do you need someone to talk to.'"

The NSO's "In Their Shoes 5K Run & Walk", happening Saturday, Sept. 13, benefits suicide prevention programs like the national suicide prevention hotline, 1800-273-TALK.

The event takes palce at Detroit's beautiful Palmer Park. The cost is $30 per person, and registration begins at 7 a.m, with the walk beginning at 9 a.m.
