Metro Detroit Dad Undergoes Life-Changing Surgery

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Call it a light bulb moment.

Bill Lowry, 33, was picking up his toddler daughter Courtney from Grandma's house last year when had to chase his daughter down the driveway to keep her out of the road.

"I had to run to catch her and it really took a lot of energy," Lowry said.

Lowry had gained about a 100 pounds and a serious smoking habit in the five years since taking his desk job in 2008. But by March 2013 -- at 360 pounds -- he knew something had to change, said Saint John Bariatric Surgeon Gary Katz.

"He felt himself spiraling downward on an irreversible path that he could not get off of," Katz said.

Lowry quit smoking to prepare for the gastric sleeve surgery, but began to have second thoughts about going through with it last August.

"My wife found out that we were expecting our son, Connor," Lowry.

Lowry decided to go through with the surgery. Now, post-surgery, Lowry is down about 110 pounds, and looking forward to celebrating his third Father's Day.

"We're just enjoying being with each other and enjoying the physical activity of being a parent again," Lowry said.
