McDonald's Is Giving Away FREE Boston Coolers On July 24 For Detroit's Birthday

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Need a good way to beat the heat this weekend?

McDonald's locations in Detroit will be giving away free Boston Coolers made with local favorite Vernors on Sunday, July 24 in celebration of the city's 315th birthday.

The promotion will run from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at participating locations in Detroit.

The creamy drink didn't originate in Boston -- as its name would suggest -- but rather the Motor City. The blended vanilla ice cream and Vernors drink is credited to Sanders Confectionery founder Fred Sanders in Detroit.

A proper Boston Cooler should have the consistency of a thick milkshake and contain 3 parts vanilla ice cream to 1 part Vernors ginger ale.
