Massive Crash Closes Eastbound I-96 At M-8, Multiple People Hospitalized
DETROIT (WWJ) -- Three people are in critical condition after a series of crashes shut down eastbound I-96 near M-8 on Detroit's west side for about four hours on Sunday morning.
Michigan State Police say a Jeep carrying six passengers spun out and struck the median while driving in the express lanes just before 8 a.m. The Jeep rolled and came to a stop in the left lane.
Several passing motorists stopped to assist but were struck by a second vehicle after they got out to help. Detroit EMS crews took nine people to area hospitals after the crash.
In total, three people are in critical condition, including a pair of good samaritans -- a 17-year-old male and a 47-year-old female -- and the driver of the second vehicle that lost control.
Alcohol appears to be a factor with second driver, however, the investigation is ongoing. It is not known if alcohol was a factor for the first vehicle.
