Marion Law Academy Gets Students Ready For New Year With Hair Cuts, Job Fair

DETROIT (WWJ) -- One school on Detroit's east side geared up for the new academic year with a few different kind of events.

Ronnie Belle, Principal of Marion Law Academy, said that there was a lot going on at the school on Thursday, including free hair cuts for students and even a job fair for parents.

"We're celebrating our students, and we're celebrating the big three -- home, school and community," Bell said. "We are bringing the community into the school, we have a job fair/back-to-school celebration for our students. We're giving away book bags, we're giving away utensils -- pencils, pens and things like that."

Marion Law, an Education Achievement Authority (EAA) school, hosted many different "entities" during it's job fair and had activities for children including face painting.

"A lot of fun, a lot of noise, a lot of chattering for my students and screams and yells because we are very excited to be back at school for the '14-'15 year," Belle said.

Assistant principal De'Angelo Alexander was charged with the duty of giving the students their free hair cuts.

"A lot of times, something as simple as a hair cut can be an excuse for a student to not show up on the first day of school," Alexander said. "So, we don't want to have any excuses -- whatever we need to do, be it uniforms, if we need to provide transportation, if we need to go and get them ourselves, whatever we need to do to make sure there's no excuses for our kids to get the academic progress they need."

"We want our kids to look good, feel good and get all of the good education that we have to give them here at Marion Law Academy," Alexander said.
