Man Who Died Along I-75 Near Saginaw Valley State Was From Westland

FRANKENLUST TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A Saginaw Valley State University student who died after being struck by two vehicles while walking on I-75 in Bay County has been identified as a Westland man.

Investigators say 21-year-old Derrick Ammons was killed late Saturday night after a series of accidents on I-75 in Frankenlust Township.

According to police, Ammons was driving northbound around 10:55 p.m. when he crashed his car into a concrete divider in the center of the freeway. After the collision, Ammons left his vehicle and began walking south down the freeway's east shoulder.

At some point, Ammons attempted to walk across the roadway, at which time he was struck by a Toyota Avalon and a Chrysler 300. He was declared dead at the scene.

Other circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Police are awaiting toxicology results.

Saginaw Valley State spokesman J.J. Boehm says Ammons was majoring in criminal justice. Ammons also was a member of the school's club dodgeball team.

Arrangements are being handled by Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home in Westland.
