Man Presumed Dead In Saginaw River After Jumping To Avoid Boat

FRANKENLUST TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities believe a man has died after he jumped into the Saginaw River from a small boat to avoid a larger boat.

The Saginaw News says one man who jumped from the boat was able to grab a buoy Friday, but a second man wasn't immediately found. Rescuers were called shortly after 11 a.m. near the Bay County-Saginaw County line. The man is presumed dead.

The men had engine trouble on their boat when a larger boat approached, likely a tug pulling a barge.

Lt. Davey Connor of the U.S. Coast Guard says the men were afraid of getting hit.
