Man Missing After Going Overboard During Outing On Detroit River

DETROIT (WWJ)  - A 44-year old man is missing after going overboard from a boat while on the Detroit River early Thursday morning.

The man, who police are not identifying, was last seen around 1 a.m. in the waters east of the MacArther Bridge, between Bell Isle and the Detroit shoreline.

"The vessel had been anchored but the operator on board accidentally fell overboard and he was not able to fight the river current and the other people on board did not see him go under - it was just friends and family," said Lt. Ben Chamberlain of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Eleven other people were on board. They were returning from a nearby concert.

"We've gotten to a point where there is not going to be any appreciable difference made with continued search efforts - again with it taking place at 1:30 this morning -- the odds of him still be on the river if he did survive are very, very low."

Chamberlain says the case remains open, but physical searches have been called off --- and the family is aware of the decision.
