Man Killed When Pickup Strikes Light Pole On Detroit's West Side

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man is dead after an early morning crash near a school on the city's west side.

According to police, the 60-year-old driver was behind the wheel of a Ford F-150 when he experienced some kind of medical emergency just before he lost control of the pickup — at around 7 a.m. along Avon Ave., near Grand River and the Southfield Freeway.

That's when police say the man smashed into a light pole and fence outside Cooke Elementary School.

He was by EMS to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police are waiting until the man's family is notified before releasing his name.

No one else was injured in the crash.
