Man Killed In Prostitution Sting At Southfield Hotel Was A Fugitive

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a man killed in an exchange of gunfire with an undercover officer during a Detroit-area prostitution sting was a fugitive from police in Kentucky.

The incident unfolded the evening of Jan. as a regional law enforcement task force was working the Marriott Hotel on Northwestern Highway in Southfield.

Authorities say 24-year-old Rakeem Bentley shot the officer in the chest, but the officer was wearing body armor. The officer returned fire, and investigators say Bentley was shot in the head. He died at the scene.

Other circumstances surrounding the case have not yet been disclosed.

The officer, who had minor injuries, has since returned to duty.

State police say the Oakland County Prosecutor's office will review the case.

According to reports, Bentley had been sought in Louisville in connection with a July 2014 home invasion, kidnapping and armed robbery of a 71-year-old woman. In that case, police allege that Bentley and two other men broke down the woman's door and tied her up while they ransacked her home for two hours. The trio reportedly got away with more than $4,000 worth of property. The woman used a knife to free herself and get help. Aside from some bruises, she was uninjured. The other two suspects, Michael Decker and Nathon Kelso, were arrested shortly after the crime.
