Man Killed In Chain Reaction Rollover Crash In I-275 Construction Zone

CANTON TWP. (WWJ) - Police say a 22-year-old man was killed when he failed to stop in time for a construction lane closure on I-275, setting off a chain reaction collision.

The accident happened around 9 p.m. Friday on northbound I-275 near Cherry Hill Road in Canton Township as traffic was entering the beginning of a construction zone.

According to police, Ronald Kaczynski was approaching the left lane closure in a GMC Jimmy when he was unable to stop in a clear distance and rear-ended a Mercedes, forcing the car to slam into the back of a third vehicle. Kaczynski's vehicle was then struck from behind by a Chevrolet Traverse, causing it to overturn.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and extricated Korzybski from the car before pronouncing the Garden City man dead at the scene.

The driver of the Chevrolet Traverse received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The freeway was shut down for about four-and-a-half hours while police investigated, but has since reopened.

Police say the crash remains under investigation.
