Man In Serious Condition After Smashing Into Buildings

CENTERLINE (WWJ) - Authorities say a motorist is in serious condition after crashing into a couple of buildings in Centerline.

The accident happened just before 6 a.m. Wednesday on Van Dyke Avenue just south of I-696.

Officials say the man was traveling northbound on Van Dyke when he apparently lost control of his truck and struck a fire hydrant. He then hit a vacant building before crashing into the East Side Bike Shop, where his truck came to a rest.

The driver was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Denny Norman, who owns the bike shop, said he has quite a bit of cleanup on his hands now.

"Oh, he drove probably a foot-and-a-half, two feet inside of it and did some major damage to the ceiling and the roof so, it's damaged pretty bad," Norman told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "But we'll survive. We'll get it boarded up and get back in business."

Van Dyke was closed for about two hours while police investigated, but has since reopened.
