Man Gets Year In Jail For Death Of 5-Month-Old Nephew Covered By Blankets, Pillows

GRAND RAPIDS (AP) - A 20-year-old western Michigan man has been sentenced to a year in jail in the death of his 5-month-old nephew, who was covered with blankets and pillows in an effort to quiet him.

Joseph Nguyen gave a statement before his sentencing Wednesday in Kent County Circuit Court, saying he made a "stupid mistake" that he must live with for the rest of his life.

He earlier pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the Dec. 26 death of Isaiah Nguyen in Wyoming, southwest of Grand Rapids.

The boy's 21-year-old father, Viet Nguyen, cried from his seat in the court during the hearing. He earlier pleaded guilty to attempted lying to police in the case after telling police he had been sleeping in bed with his son. He was sentenced to probation.
