Man Fatally Shot In Standoff With Police At Michigan Motel

BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Police say a man has been killed during a standoff at a motel in southwestern Michigan after he abducted his estranged wife at her job.

State police Lt. Mike Dawson says Marcus Meridy was fatally shot Wednesday after firing at police. He tells The Herald-Palladium newspaper that a bullet struck an officer in his protective vest.

The 44-year-old Meridy took his wife at gunpoint from an assisted-living center in St. Joseph where she worked and brought her to the American Inn in Benton Township.

Police negotiated with Meridy for about an hour before shots were exchanged.

The Willows assisted-living center was on lockdown after Meridy appeared with a gun. The woman's injuries aren't life-threatening.

Note: The story has been corrected to show the man and woman were estranged, not divorced.
