Man Disappears In Lake Erie Trying To Rescue Boys

ERIE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities have been searching Lake Erie for a 34-year-old Detroit man who disappeared while trying to rescue two boys who were having trouble making it back to shore.

The Monroe County sheriff's department says that Juan A. Layva and another man took their sons to go fishing Sunday morning in the lake. The site is near the CMS Energy Corp. Whiting power plant in Erie Township, just north of the Ohio state line.

The sheriff's department says in a statement that the 12- and 13-year-old boys went swimming but encountered an off-shore current.

The department says that Layva began swimming toward the boys but also had trouble. It says a La Salle Township Fire Department boat rescued the boys, but the man couldn't be located.
