Man Dies After Crashing Car Into Madison Heights Fruit Market

MADISON HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Authorities say a Detroit man has died after his vehicle smashed in to a grocery store in Madison Heights.

The accident happened around 11 p.m. Monday on John R Road just north of 12 Mile Road.

According to reports, a silver Dodge Charger was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and left the roadway. The vehicle then rolled onto the driver's side and crashed into CJ's Fruit Market. The collision caused a portion the building's walls to come crashing down on the vehicle.

The driver — identified as 22-year-old Talando Mattox — was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

The market, which suffered some damage, reopened after a building inspector conducted a safety check.

Police say alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Police are asking anyone who might have witnessed the incident to contact investigators at 248-585-2100.
