Man Charged With Murder In Shooting At Royal Oak Home

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Bond has been denied for a 27-year-old man accused in a killing at a Royal Oak home.

WWJ's Laura Bonnell reported Kirk Leach, of Royal Oak, was led into in 44th District Court for his arraignment wearing a thin, papery blue jumpsuit with his hands cuffed behind his back.

He been charged with two felony counts: open murder and possession of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Leach was asked by Judge Derek Meinecke if he had an attorney.

"I haven't really looked around for an attorney, I have an attorney written down on my arm; I would like to give him a try," he said. "I'm not sure how this works...I've never gone through this."

No bond was set. A few supporters shouted, "He didn't do it!" as Leach was led from the courtroom.

Leach was arrested Monday afternoon in Garden City just hours after 28-year old Kenith Walter arrived at Beaumont Hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Walter died a short time later.

Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue said "there was some type of dispute in the home," on Fern Street near 12 Mile and Rochester roads, that led to the fatal shooting.

Polive haven't talked about a possible motive, but the two men clearly knew each other.  Sources told Fox 2 reporters Leach is her son's ex-girlfriend's brother.

Leach has prior misdemeanor convictions for possession of marijuana, retail fraud, driving on a suspended license, driving without a license and open intoxicants in a vehicle.

He is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause hearing on Friday, Nov. 6.
