Man Charged With Killing Mom On New Year's Eve

SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A Jackson-area man has been charged with murder in the death of his mother on New Year's Eve.

Police say 29-year-old Matthew King told investigators that he killed Kristy King following an argument and put her body in the basement of their home.

King appeared Friday in Jackson District Court on an open murder charge. He asked for an appointed lawyer.

State police Sgt. Michael Church tells the Jackson Citizen Patriot that King admitted striking his 59-year-old mother in the head with a dumbbell and strangling her in Jackson County's Summit Township.

Church says King might have mental health problems, based on his statements. He says King was remorseful but made references to "government mind control."
