Man Charged In Rape Faces Detroit Arson Hearing

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A man charged in connection with a gang rape reported just prior to a blaze that gutted a 42-unit Detroit apartment building faces an arson charge in a separate house fire.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says 21-year-old Carlos Love was to be arraigned Monday on second-degree arson and preparation to burn real property in an October fire on Rogge Street.

Love and 19-year-old Dantraz Oliver-McClung were charged last week with first-degree criminal sexual conduct following a reported rape of a 19-year-old woman earlier this month at an apartment building on Jason Street.

That fire broke out at Jason Manor Apartments on Schoolcraft Road, near Outer Drive and I-96, the morning of March 5 — a few hours after the young woman reported being sexually assaulted there by multiple men.

At least 80 firefighters and 20 trucks responded to the fire. Crews rescued 25 people who were trapped inside their apartments, while other residents, some nearly naked, frantically jumped from windows to escape the flames. Nearly all of the building's 42 units were occupied.   Four people were hospitalized and several others were treated at the scene.

Authorities have said the fire was intentionally set in the west side building; but, so far, no one has been charged in that arson.

A preliminary examination is scheduled for Tuesday in the rape case.
