Calvin Howard (Oakland County Sheriff's Office)

PONTIAC (WWJ) -- A man is in custody in Oakland County after he tried to take a weapon from an officer after he fled from a traffic stop.

Calvin Darnell Howard, 22, of Pontiac was arraigned on Friday and charged with felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a controlled substance and other charges.

The incident happened after an Oakland County deputy stopped a vehicle in the area of Raeburn and S. Sanford in Pontiac on Wednesday. Howard, who was in the backseat of the car, tried to run away on foot, but was caught by the officer.

A struggle ensued and a fully-loaded, semi-automatic handgun allegedly fell out of Howard's waistband, police say. He then allegedly tried to grab the deputy's gun, but was unsuccessful.

Other officers arrived and Howard was tasered. Along with the handgun, 20 grams of heroin was also found in his possession.

Howard had a warrant out for his arrest for a probation violation. He will appear in court again on August 2.
