Man Arraigned From Hospital For Attempted Break-In Of Retired Officer's Home

DETROIT (AP) — A 22-year-old man has been charged in connection with an attempted break-in at the home of a retired Detroit police sergeant who shot one of two men during a struggle outside the house.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says Jalen Whitlock was arraigned Monday at a hospital on attempted home invasion and gun charges.

The 76-year-old former officer was in the living room of his west side home Tuesday afternoon when he heard noises at the back door. He confronted two men trying to pry off a screen and fired three shots at them.

Whitlock was shot and later arrested at an area hospital.

A probable cause conference has been scheduled for March 14. Whitlock's preliminary examination is March 21.
