Man Caught At Ikea, Accused Of Killing Girlfriend's Baby To Undergo Competency Exam

MIDLAND (WWJ/AP) - A Michigan man faces examinations to determine if he is criminally responsible and competent to stand trial on murder and first-degree child abuse charges in the death of his girlfriend's 4-month-old daughter.

A judge signed the orders last month for Richard Watson of Mio.

Watson was with his girlfriend and her infant daughter, Evelyn Patricia Legacy, on Aug. 9 at the Ikea store in Wayne County's Canton Township when workers noticed the baby's lethargic state and called 911.

Rescue workers responded to the store and determined Evelyn was suffering from severe respiratory problems. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she died.

An examination later revealed that Evelyn had a brain injury and multiple fractures. Investigators believe she was injured at a Midland home.

According to the Midland Daily News, Watson told police he had woke up around 4 o'clock that morning to take pain medication and Evelyn was crying. While trying to quiet the baby, who is not his child, Watson "snapped and began shaking the baby in her crib."

Watson remains jailed without bond.
