Mail Carrier Who Went On Shopping Spree With Stolen Checks Gets Probation

DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit mail carrier who shopped at high-end retailers after stealing checks on her route has been placed on probation.

The government says Dorothy Rogers deposited 12 checks worth $16,220 in her account, mostly through her phone. Two other checks weren't deposited. The money apparently wasn't for the basics of life.

Prosecutors say the 24-year-old shopped at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Victoria's Secret. One of the stolen checks was from a church.

Prosecutors agreed with Rogers that probation was appropriate. Defense lawyer Stacey Studnicki says Rogers has shown a "great deal of remorse."
