Low Voter Turnout Marks Local Millage Elections Across State

DETROIT (WWJ) - It was called a historic proposal. Voters in Hazel Park and Eastpointe overwhelmingly approved a tax increase to fund police and fire departments in both cities.

Approval means both cities will be able to keep their existing staffing levels and protection.

Voters in Eastpointe will pay about $350 more a year. Hazel Park homeowners will pay about $150. Both cities may use the newly approved authority to work together to purchase equipment and supplies.

Voters in the city of Plymouth have voted down a public safety millage. The city was seeking 1.5 additional mills for five years for public safety in an election campaign that was not well publicized.

While Plymouth Township voters approved two tax proposals for police and fire services.

In out-state elections, voters in Montrose, northwest of Flint, rejected an initiative to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.

In West Michigan, a road funding proposal was approved in Kalamazoo Township, but rejected in Muskegon County.
