Love Triangle Sparks Barricaded Gunman Situation In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say a barricaded gunman situation that apparently was triggered by a lover's quarrel has been resolved peacefully.
The incident started around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday at a home on Collingwood Street, in a west side neighborhood near Chicago Boulevard and the Lodge Freeway.
Detroit Police Commander Elvin Barren said the gunman eventually gave himself up just past 7 a.m.
"At this time, the suspect is in custody. Our negotiators were able to successfully talk him out of the home. No one was injured," Barren told WWJ's Ron Dewey.
The situation unfolded hours earlier when a woman came home and found her boyfriend with another woman.
"The victim alleges that she was assaulted by her would-be boyfriend and he then fired shots from a shotgun," Barren told WWJ's Ron Dewey.
Both women were able to escape unharmed. The man then barricaded himself inside the home.
Barren said police could see the man pacing back and forth in the house "like he's a little angry. He's broken out the back window of the home in his anger and haste."
The man, who has a history of narcotics-related crimes, was eventually talked out of the home.
"In these times, individuals can get desperate," Barren said. "I think he realized the dynamics of the seriousness of the situation, which made him realize 'Hey, I might be going away for a long time' because he is a felon, he's on parole."
It wasn't immediately clear what charges the man might be facing.
"He's a felon in possession of a weapon, so he could possibly go back to prison for a long time," Barren said.
