Livonia Opens Rec Center To Residents Without Power

LIVONIA (WWJ) - The city of Livonia is opening up its recreation center to Livonia and Redford Township residents who lost power during Friday's severe storm.

Residents can take a shower at the rec center and relax if they're waking up without power. Livonia's Parks and Recreation Superintendent Lyle Trudell said the shelter will even host storm victims overnight.

"If they have to spend the night because they don't have any power, they need to call in at least two hours before we close, which would be 6 p.m.," Saturday, Trudell said.

The Livonia Recreation Center is on West 5 Mile Road between Merriman and Farmington roads. It will be open from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m.

For more information or to arrange an overnight stay, call 734-466-2900 or visit the rec center in person.

DTE Energy said Friday's storm was one of the strongest to hit the metro area this year, leaving about 385,000 people without power. The storm packed wind gusts of more than 75 miles per hour, topping trees and knocking down more than 2,000 power lines.
