ALLEN PARK (CBS DETROIT) - Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell announced Friday that the team will have game captains only this season, with no one wearing the "C."

"We have so many good leaders on this team that we'll end up picking game captains," Caldwell said. "That's how we'll work it the entire year."

Last season, Detroit's captains were wide receiver Calvin Johnson, quarterback Matthew Stafford, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, linebacker Stephen Tulloch, defensive back John Wendling and kicker David Akers. (Wendling and Akers no longer play for Detroit.)

The Lions will announce Saturday which players will be captains for the team's season opener on Monday Night Football.

If Caldwell's reasoning for the game-by-game captain system sounds familiar, it might because because University of Michigan head coach Brady Hoke gave the same justification for taking a similar approach with the Wolverines this season.
