Lions Place DeAndre Levy On Injured Reserve, Sign James-Michael Johnson

The Lions announced Wednesday they have placed linebacker DeAndre Levy on injured reserve, ending his season. He sustained a hip injury (what he called a "hip strain") in the preseason, re-injured himself in Week 5 and underwent surgery a couple of weeks ago. Head coach Jim Caldwell had refused to confirm whether Levy would sit out another extended period of time, but the IR tag was not unexpected.
After missing the first four games this season, Levy attempted to come back in Week 5 against the Cardinals, but re-aggravated the injury and has been out ever since.
The Lions' defense has been listless this season, tumbling in the league's rankings from No. 2 in total defense last year to 27th this season. Levy was the team's leading tackler last season, and was second overall in the NFL.
To fill Levy's place, the Lions signed linebacker James-Michael Johnson, who was drafted in 2012. Johnson spent two games in Jacksonville this season, then one with the Buccaneers.
In his career, Johnson has tallied 88 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles in 45 games.
Levy is the second player the Lions have placed on injured reserve in as many weeks. Zach Zenner headed to the list after he sustained five fractures to his ribs and a partially collapsed lung against the Bears.
